The Eagle Harbor Township Board is exploring options for improving wastewater management in our community. Aging and ineffective septic systems across residential properties in Eagle Harbor Township are a growing environmental and replacement cost issue.
To ensure a safe, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible solution, we are considering three options:
1. A traditional municipal sanitary sewage system (high cost but centralized). This system would be available to most customers on the water system. If public funding is involved, all property owners in the service area would be required to connect to the system.
2. A Septic Tank Effluent Pumping (STEP) system (affordable, efficient, and community-managed). The property owner would be responsible for maintenance of their septic tank (Including normal pump out). The Township would be responsible for pumping and hauling effluent only to a central disposal facility. This option could be available to all Township property owners if it gets approved by Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Local Health Department. Important Note: The STEP system is being considered because connections would be voluntary, and the service could be made available to all Township property upon State and Local government approval.
3. Continue with private septic systems
It is important that we consider the needs of the residents. We want to prepare in advance for changing environmental rules and choose what we believe to be the most effective and efficient option for this community. We need your input to determine the best course of action.
Please take 5 minutes to complete our community survey. Your responses will help us understand the level of interest in a new system, your concerns about costs, maintenance, and feasibility while helping identify approximately how many households will participate in a new system if we move forward with a STEP system.
