Home - Welcome to Eagle Harbor Township

Notices to Eagle Harbor Township residents and taxpayers

May!! We moved into May without much fanfare, the "spring-like" temps have remained stable around 35 degrees....I think we are all excited for the days of 50's and 60's with some bright sunshine! May brings blossoming trees and shrubs, deer moving upland, and Township residents opening up cottages for the season.

STR Ordinance is a hot topic and the Planning Commission will take it up again when it starts to meet in May. There is a survey that has been sent to improved properties in the Township, to collect data on current short-term rentals. Thanks to those that sent them in, 186 responses out of 475 sent out will give the planning commission some good data for discussions. The planning commission met on Tuesday the 17th of May and discussed the results (linked below) and walked through the details of the previous draft ordinance. Minutes of that meeting will be posted next week.

If you have any other input, please plan on attending those meetings and help direct the conversation.

The Solid Waste Improvement Committee met recently and came to the conclusion that the incinerator container will no longer be used after March 31st. Please put your paper in the single stream recycling container or the garbage container. Thanks!

Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF), part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)

One goal of the SLFRF is to provide resources to state, local, and tribal governments to fight the pandemic and support families and businesses struggling with its public health and economic impacts. The ARPA Allocation committee has developed applications to aid families and businesses in the Township that have been affected by COVID. Financial relief will be provided to qualifying applicants based on the guidelines set forth by the US Department of Treasury SLFRF final rule, follow the link: Overview of the final rule

These applications are available until the deadline of May 31st, 2022. If you know of a family or business in the Township that is struggling, please inform them of this opportunity. If you need assistance with any of this information, please reach out to Rich at the township office.

Eagle Harbor Township Recreation Area expansion!

The Clark family has been working with the Township for well over four years to get a pivotal piece of property into the Township hands! It finally closed over the winter and we will be able to keep the trails open and maintained in perpetuity. This portion of the Eagle Harbor Trails has historically been used for the cross country ski trails and we have been allowed to groom and maintain them, with their permission for over 20 years! Thank you Clark Family! The Park Committee is in charge of maintaining these trails and we have recently installed a trailhead sign indicating it as Township property!

This property purchase was made possible with a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant. The Township has been very fortunate to be a recipient of these funds for projects like securing the summit of Brockway Mountain, and other land purchases. Please note that these trails run through Michigan Nature Association sanctuaries and the purpose of these multi-use trials is Non-Motorized uses like hiking, biking, skiing and the like.

Updated Channel 28

We recently upgraded our equipment that outputs content to Channel 28 on the Eagle Harbor Cable System, provided by Cable America (thank you Jackson Family!) If you follow the link to the left for Channel 28 Notices, there is a link on the top that will play the scrolling channel line up and any current information that is on Channel 28. A big thanks to Dave Ellis for his time, skills and talent!

We have been fortunate to have someone volunteer his time and resources to install a weather station at the summit of Brockway Mountain. Click either of the links below to view current data. Thanks to John Lenters for the setup and we look forward to more weather related information from him in the near future!

Due to technological difficulties - the weather station hasn't been running.....stand by

EHT Cross Country Ski Trails

Click on the updated Ski Trail Map link - 2022 Map

Please know that we have removed a section of the trail that went through some private property. There were no issues, but rather the Park Committee is trying to more permanently secure the trail and felt that it was time to reroute some of it. We have been very fortunate to use these properties for so many years, thank you! The entire trail will now be accessed through the Dorothy and Fritz Carlton Loop. Last year we added another trail option, close to the Eliza trailhead - a 1.6K loop that goes around our Well House, called the Wellhead Loop. It is a lollypop loop that does cross the snowmobile trail, so be careful. Check out the map link above.

Current Status of trails: Updated 4/4/22

Grooming operations have been suspended for the year. Thank you for your support and hope you enjoyed the ski season!

D & F Carlton Loop (6K) - Spring Conditions, not groomed

Sand Bay Spur (3K one way) - Spring Conditions, not groomed

Shadow's Shortcut (.6K) - Spring Conditions, not groomed

Wellhead Loop (1.6K) - Spring Conditions, not groomed

AGAIN, Thank you to the Keweenaw Community Foundation. Through a Cross Country Ski Grant, Eagle Harbor Township recieved a new track setting block to update our current track setting block. The current specimen is roughly 25 years old and well past its useful life. Thank you, thank you KCF!!

Please think about supporting the Keweenaw Community Foundation - especially the Cross Country Ski Endowment if you enjoy skiing in the Keweenaw!
