New A Note to Township residents and taxpayers

Mid-Summer…..I can’t believe that I just said that.  What seemed like a never-ending winter gave way to a spring that started nicely and continued cool until the end of June.  There was some beautiful weather for the 4th of July activities, but now we seem to be in a cool period again.  Our hope is that August is a warm month and we get a nice long fall!  Activities in the township are in full swing, from Church services to the Ladies Breakfast, Bridge night and Mahjongg, children playing in the playground and attempting to swim to the raft, everything is as it should be in the Harbor.   August activities include the Smiths Pig roast on the first weekend, and the Art Fair on the second weekend along with a rummage sale by the Keweenaw Historical Society.  We just had our July Monthly meeting at the schoolhouse, with over sixty people in attendance there are many that are interested in township business!!  The office has been busy with people stopping in to say hello and share winter stories.  We have been processing zoning permits and helping people improve their properties.  The new Emergency Services Building is scheduled for ground breaking in mid-August.  The hard work of the Planning Commission and the Zoning Administrator is paying off, with several Special Land Use permits being issued on account of the update to the Zoning Ordinance that went into effect on the 1st of this year.  It is nice to be able to help people achieve goals and see business grow in the area.  Please let us know if there is something we can do for you, that’s why we’re here. ..……questions, comments –

Upcoming Meetings at the Township Hall

Regular Twp. Board 2nd Monday of the month at 7:00 PM

Always check the Channel 28 Link at the bottom left, to see what other happenings are in the works.

Interested people apply within!!

We are always looking for people that want to be involved with township planning and zoning. The Planning Commission works on the Townships 5 year Comprehensive Plan and, reflected through that, the Zoning Ordinance. The Planning Commission has regularly scheduled meetings throughout the year. The Zoning Board of Appeals(ZBA) looks at issues that residents have with interpreting the ordinance. The ZBA meets when necessary, to hear and decide appeals on provisions of the Ordinance. Full time residents are the best fit for these boards, but we’re pretty flexible.

Town Hall / Fire Hall Complex Committee

321 Center Street

In January 2013, the Township board established a committee to look into the feasibility of building a new fire hall, and/or a new township hall complex. The current township office space was built in 1955, with the fire hall built in 1981, and has been added onto several times to meet growing needs. The committee met throughout the winter into the spring and summer, and along the way established a sub-committee that was charged with providing information to and receiving information from the community. A public hearing was held in July at which time there were a lot of positive comments and support for the efforts of the Community Complex Committee. At the last meeting of the Community Complex Committee, held on September 5 the committee voted in favor of recommending to the Township Board the construction of a new Emergency Services Building at a site east of Eagle Harbor South, on township owned property and to continue in three phases. Phase 1: Build a new Emergency Services Building. Phase 2: Repurpose the existing fire hall space for short term use. Phase 3: Build a new Township Hall. From the beginning, we decided that no new taxes would be used for this project, and that is the reason for progressing in phases. We will use existing funds and revenues to proceed. We will also be extremely happy to accept donations (tax-deductible, of course! )

Update!......The Township is currently in the process of obtaining a USDA – Rural Development Loan. The projected costs for Phase 1 and Phase 2 are $720,00. A Notice of Intent has been published in the paper, and we continue to work on the plans and specifics of the project. The Township Board, at its December meeting, voted to continue the process and it looks as though we may be putting the project out for bids this spring and construction could begin this summer. We feel this is a worthy project, that will give us in the office, Firemen, First Responders, and Residents a bit more room for the things that we like to do.

Update!!….The Township closed on the Loan with USDA – Rural Development on Friday the 11th of July.  We had a pre-construction meeting with the contractor and sub-contractors and it looks like a mid-August ground breaking with the building scheduled to be completed in early winter.  We will keep you posted and include some photos as the project continues!

New Eagle Harbor Township Solid Waste Facitily is now recycling

The Recycling Program has paused!

Due to the Goodwill discontinuing their recycling program we are left with nowhere to take our plastic and paper products. We will continue to take metal, and go back to the old methods for paper products.

Thanks for understanding, as we continue to look for alternatives!
